Teaching Experience

Being a student myself almost all my life since age 5, I have developed my own style of learning. I believe this unique style of learning can be imparted to other students so as to benefit them in their learning journeys. Some of my learning techniques include creating mind maps and chapter summaries. My most unique teaching technique is to get my own students to explain the topics to me and I will ask probing questions repeatedly to test their understanding. By trying to teach the concepts to me, my students are pushed to a deeper level of appreciation of the subjects. At the same time, my students also get to practice their presentation skills, which is a critical skill set to succeed in their future careers.

My teaching style varies from student to student. Each student is a unique individual that requires different adaption to get the maximum return of investment (ROI) for their parents. For fast learners, I will challenge the student's mental models, giving them questions to motivate them to think further beyond the syllabus. For slower learners, I focus more on the fundamentals, structuring the learning points in smaller chunks for them and coming up with everyday examples so that they are better able to correlate with the contents in the textbooks.

Over the last 14 years since my Junior College days, I have been giving tuition and performing teaching assistant work on my pet subjects Maths, Physics and Computer Science. I have met with students from a wide spectrum of family backgrounds, learning environments and academic abilities. Some of the more interesting cases include tutoring experiences with Americans, UK students, Chinese students from mainland China and twins with different learning capabilities.

The first time I received a teacher's day gift from one of my earlier students, I was extremely touched as it was the best testimonials of the good relationship that I have established with my student. I believe that a tutoring relationship goes beyond the textbook materials. I also serve as mentors to my students, sharing with them my own experiences in subjects close to their hearts such as whether to take on bonded scholarships, interviewing techniques, which university and courses to apply for and experiences in National Service.

Patience, is the word. Other than patience, it is still patience – An important factor and character that is essential for being a private tutor, especially in Singapore. Kids are already having tough time to cope and catch up with tons of homework and stress from the school, never will it be easy for them to face another round of bombardment after school hours.

In my opinion, a patient tutor must be able to build up the confidence level of a child who has certain difficulties in adapting to the competition in school. And I believe that’s what most parents are looking for. Naturally, when a child’s confidence level is given a booster, he will have a different perspective and views towards his learning path.

And Chee Yong is the ONE! I can see the drive and enthusiasm in my son now, right after the first Science lesson he had with Chee Yong. The interactive and different approach in teaching by Chee Yong is effective and helpful. My son is even spotted reading Science notes on the bed nowadays! May not be very good for his eyes, though. He has since look upon Chee Yong as a role to follow!

Helpful, responsible, knowledgeable and patient are words for Chee Yong. My million thanks to him!
